A Day in the Life of a Cosmetologist

Starting the day: All salons have different hours and all stylists have their own unique schedules. Cosmetologists typically start their days by cleaning and organizing their personal hair styling stations. Stylists must make sure their blow dryers, flat irons, and other styling tools are clean and in their designated spots. They must also make sure their stations are well-organized and presentable in order to provide the most comfortable atmosphere for clients. Once their stations are ready, cosmetologists may work on cleaning and organizing common areas of the salon, such as the entryway and sitting area.

Preparing for and servicing clients: After straightening up around the salon, cosmetologists must then get ready for the day’s first clients. They can look over the schedule to see who they will be working with throughout the day. This also allows the cosmetologists to see any special notes or requests from clients. Next, stylists wait at their stations for their first clients to arrive, take walk-in clients when possible, and answer phones. During each appointment, cosmetologists speak with clients to determine exactly how they want their hair to look. Cosmetologists are also welcome to speak casually with their clients and really get to know them. In between appointments, stylists will clean their stations and check in with the front desk to see if there are any new appointments or requests.

Ending the day: Once the last client has left, cosmetologists will clean up any leftover hair or hair products around their stations and reorganize their tools for the next day.
