A Look at 2012 Hair Trends

Last updated 11 months ago

Now that summer is rapidly approaching, everyone is interested in changing up their hairstyles! 2012’s hair trends are exciting and bold. Traditional highlights are out, and in their place are a few super-hot hair colors. When you train to become a cosmetologist, you will discover how important it is to stay current on the latest trends in order to please your clients.

  • All-over color: This is the season for bold, one-color looks, especially platinum blonde, vivacious red, or deep chocolate. The key to the all-over color look is a powerful, statement-making shade to dazzle; steer clear of a subtle ash blonde or chestnut brown in order to stay in line with this trend. The trick is to pick a color that will both stand out and complement your client’s skin tone and eye color.

  • Long, wavy locks: As worn by Kim Kardashian and Megan Fox, the long, tousled look is in for 2012. Recommend volumizing shampoo, conditioner, and a diffuser to your clients so that they can achieve this alluring style at home.
  • Ombre highlights: Seen on the likes of celebrities such as Rachel Bilson, Drew Barrymore, and Ashlee Simpson, the ombre style is achieved by placing panels, or large swaths of hair dyed a different color using foiling, so that hair appears to gradually lighten from root to end. Ombre highlights are perfect for brunettes and women who prefer a lower-maintenance hair color—ombre highlights only require touchup once or twice a year.
  • Panel highlights: If your client doesn’t want to commit to just one color or prefers an edgier look, panel highlights may be just right. Panels offer an excellent way to add in color. The cut of the hair will often dictate the placement of panels.
