Knowing how to give a simple trim for long hair is a very useful skill for cosmetologists and amateur haircutters alike. Watch this instructional video to see how it’s done.
Ensure that the hair is wet and completely combed through. Separate the hair into sections and pin up the sections you will be trimming later on. Begin at the very bottom back section. Comb the hair straight down and determine where you will be trimming; then, start cutting from the center. Use your comb as a guide to keep the cutting straight. Make sure there are no spots that are longer than the others. Pull down the next section and repeat the combing and cutting process.

Now that summer is rapidly approaching, everyone is interested in changing up their hairstyles! 2012’s hair trends are exciting and bold. Traditional highlights are out, and in their place are a few super-hot hair colors. When you train to become a cosmetologist, you will discover how important it is to stay current on the latest trends in order to please your clients.
- All-over color: This is the season for bold, one-color looks, especially platinum blonde, vivacious red, or deep chocolate. The key to the all-over color look is a powerful, statement-making shade to dazzle; steer clear of a subtle ash blonde or chestnut brown in order to stay in line with this trend. The trick is to pick a color that will both stand out and complement your client’s skin tone and eye color.
- Long, wavy locks: As worn by Kim Kardashian and Megan Fox, the long, tousled look is in for 2012. Recommend volumizing shampoo, conditioner, and a diffuser to your clients so that they can achieve this alluring style at home.
- Ombre highlights: Seen on the likes of celebrities such as Rachel Bilson, Drew Barrymore, and Ashlee Simpson, the ombre style is achieved by placing panels, or large swaths of hair dyed a different color using foiling, so that hair appears to gradually lighten from root to end. Ombre highlights are perfect for brunettes and women who prefer a lower-maintenance hair color—ombre highlights only require touchup once or twice a year.
- Panel highlights: If your client doesn’t want to commit to just one color or prefers an edgier look, panel highlights may be just right. Panels offer an excellent way to add in color. The cut of the hair will often dictate the placement of panels.

If you are passionate about pursuing a career in cosmetology, it is essential to find the best school that will give you the best training. The program you choose can also have a large impact on the type of work you end up getting after graduation.
Asking these important questions will help you make the right choice when looking at potential
cosmetology schools:
- What careers will I be able to pursue after graduation? Start your search by finding a school that will help you achieve your goals regarding your future and your career. Many schools focus on specific areas that may not help you follow the career path you find most appealing. Here at the Hair Design Institute of Florida, we cover a variety of cosmetology-related topics. That means you will have the skills you need to pursue a variety of cosmetology-related careers!
- How do you provide a well-rounded education? It is also important to ask about each potential school’s curriculum. A regular classroom-like setting is great for lectures and similarly-styled lessons, but it is not always the best environment for studying cosmetology. Your school should also offer hands-on training, as well as teachings from professional hair stylists and salon owners. You can find all of these qualities at the Hair Design Institute of Florida.
- Can you work with my schedule? The right school will work with you and your lifestyle. That means fitting in with your current schedule. If you are currently working or have other obligations, you will need to choose a school that offers flexible scheduling. We offer part time, full time, day, evening, and Saturday classes here at the Hair Design Institute of Florida, making it easy to fit in with any schedule.
- Do you offer job placement after graduation? Your cosmetology school should help you achieve your career goals both during your studies and after your graduate. The Hair Design Institute of Florida has a wonderful job placement program that lasts a lifetime!
